Welcome to Woocoo
The name 'Woocoo' was originally given to Mt. Woocoo in the area now known as Woocoo Shire. The local parish took on the name and eventually, when the Woocoo Shire was officially defined and born in 1915, the Parish became the central hub of the area. 'Woocoo is taken from the original word 'Woocoon', the Aboriginal name for the echidna.
The Woocoo Shire has plentiful attractions to entice people to visit and settle in the area. The climate, being one of the best in Queensland, has an average 1100mm per annum rainfall, mild winters and summers, and provides for a very comfortable lifestyle.
Since the days of settlement, cattle grazing, dairy farming and sugar cane farming has played a large part in the overall prosperity of the area, with the beautiful Mary River winding through the Shire providing the needs of farming while still allowing for plenty of areas for leisure.
Woocoo has three primary schools within the Shire, being Brooweena, Parke and Mungar while High School students attend schools located in Maryborough - St. Marys, Aldridge and Maryborough High.
